Weekly Refection 6

  • Are there any digital accessibility practices that you often see being missed? Are there any that you know YOU often miss?

The biggest digital accessibility practices that are often missed, is making videos more accessible. In loud classrooms, and with distracting sounds and images, information can often be missed, and there are many different ways to make your videos more accessible. Adding captions is massive in assisting all types of learners, especially those who are hard of hearing and captions are also just useful for the reasons I stated earlier.

  • Are there any digital accessibility practices that surprised you? Why?

The biggest surprise to me was the part about colour. I have never considered how colour is perceived diffrently. Whether its colour blindness or something else, colours are used to enhance videos, websites and videogames. Making sure colours aren’t too harsh, saturated or bright, is a simple way to make things that much more accessible.

I started looking through some music stuff that I have already dabbled with, and put a few ideas into Bandlab. When I’m writing lyrics or coming up with song ideas for my band, Im usually pretty good at it when there is an instrumental already written. When I don’t have an instrumental, it is a lot more difficult for me to generate ideas. So, I went through my Voice memo’s app on my phone, and pulled up a few clips onto Bandlab to look at what I have thought up in the past. The reason I’m using Bandlab for this and not logic pro (the software I will be using), is becasue I have found it a lot easier to important audio files onto Bandlab.

Turns out, I did not like any of the ideas that I had a while ago. So its back to square one, but I now know that Bandlab is still going to be very uselful for when I start writing.

Describe possible cross-curricular active learning opportunities for 3D Design & 3D Printing.

The possibilities for cross-curricular activities are endless with 3D printing. 3D print objects from history such as medieval armor when studying the feudal system, or samurai swords when studying Japan. Learning math makes geometry that much more engaging when you have a finished project to take home. 3D printing can offer many different solutions for students who have difficulties learning. Having physical copies of letters to practice spelling is just one example of many different ways that learning can be adapted for different learners with 3D printing.

What are the potential pros and cons of using 3D Design and print at the school and grade levels you hope to teach at?

Some pros that come to mind are that it provides a new lens for learning different subjects, such as math, social studies, and science. For Middle School students, the vast majority of students are quite technologically savvy, and sites such as Tinkercad, which are very user-friendly, can be used creatively and effectively to provide a safe and fun 3D printing experience. Some obvious cons are that 3D printers are very expensive to buy and run, so I can see obvious accessibility issues in that regard.

Free Inquiry 4

This week, I chose what I will do for my free inquiry project. I will be writing, recording, and hopefully releasing my first song. But, before I started the fun stuff, I needed to make some important decisions. Firstly, I need to pick which recording software I will be using. I need software with good recording capabilities, as well as good mixing tools, to make my vocals and anything else I will be recording sound as high quality and professional as possible. I don’t want to spend a bunch of money and go to a recording studio, as I work best at home when it comes to music. Secondly, I need something with a solid MIDI library. This means that I have a vast selection of instrument sounds built into the software that I can use to thicken up my song, without having to record each part by hand. This will also be useful, as I don’t know how to play the drums, so having a vast selection of drum sounds is essential. Lastly, I need the software to be affordable and user-friendly. I have narrowed it down, to either Bandlab, which is a free website that I have used to record demo’s in the past. FL Studio, which I have no experience with but isn’t too expensive, and Logic Pro by Apple. I have decided to go with Logic Pro, just because I have previous experience with it, and it has a 90-day free trial, which is more than enough time to see if it works for me.

Talk about how you’ve found GenAI useful or not for educational purposes.

I have found GenAI very useful in certain educational instances. In my first-year English classes at Camosun, my professor suggested using it to write our essay outlines. So. I would put in my thesis and it would give me a template to follow and guidelines to organize my ideas and writing. In my first-year lab science courses, I would use it to provide me with study guides for exams as well as outlines for labs.

Describe possible use cases for GenAI in school settings at the grade level you would like to teach or describe why it would not be appropriate for your grade level.

I don’t know which grade I would like to teach but I know that for my L2P class that I am in, (grade 6) Lesson plans as well as gym games could be done by GenAI. For example, tell AI, I have 6 frisbees and 25 students give me a gym lesson plan for grade 6, teaching ultimate frisbee. Chat GPT for example will give you this:
I can see how AI can be used unethically in teaching, for example with report cards, but its ability to increase organization, creativity, and valuable lesson plans shouldn’t be ignored.

Weekly Reflection 2

With the brief experience I had with H5P, I think that these tools will not be useful for the grade I would like to teach. However, with the amount of online learning increasing in elementary schools every year, I am confident that in the near future that will change. Currently, the only issue I see with why H5P and other interactive learning sites aren’t applicable for elementary school children, is that children that age don’t have enough access to technology where those resources would be applicable. That being said, having interactive-based learning is proven to be incredibly useful in the classroom for knowledge retention. currently, I can only see H5P being used in a class if a teacher is presenting a lesson on a projector and having the class answer the H5P quiz altogether.

Multi-media Learning Theory can help us create more effective instructional videos and tutorials. It’s important that we maximize and not diminish a child’s ability to learn and a multi-media approach to learning is an ideal way to do that. In a classroom setting, there are many distractions that can impede learning, and we don’t want our lessons to do the same. Having text describing an image and then, as a teacher, reading off the screen to your class, leads to a very overwhelming, situation. Dr. Ray Pastore in his video “What is Multimedia Learning? What is Multimedia?”, this also ties into how learners need to be able to control the pace of instruction, for an effective learning environment.

Free inquiry blog post 1

I have struggled to pick an inquiry topic for this course. On the one hand, I am really into making and performing music. I have released two EPs, lots of singles, and a full-length album under the name Playgrounds. I have performed multiple shows throughout Victoria such as Little Fernwood, VEC, and Sticky Wicket. The one challenge I have found is in all of these verses, I have been very dependent on my bandmates both in recording and performing. Something that has interested me would be to potentially produce, record, and publish my very own solo song. This would be a lot of work but it’s something that would help me further pursue music in the future.

My other idea would be to target something that would help me further myself in my professional field. Teaching is such a broad subject with so many resources to help me and I would love to try and find something and use it to help me in my future teachings. I am an incredibly disorganized person so being able to utilize technology in a free inquiry sense to organize myself now and in the future would be incredibly useful and helpful.

Weekly Reflection – Topic 2

Do we need to reimagine education?

The world we live in is constantly changing and evolving, so education needs to change and evolve with it. Whether it’s adapting to new behavior issues, attention deficits, or AI, the new world of education is changing fast and curriculum, teachers, and resources need to be changing with it.

What concerns you and/or excites you about this approach?

There is a lot that excites me about the future of education. I remember when I was starting my education journey and the teacher would wheel out the old box TV with the VHS player attached underneath, now im learning how to use AI so who knows what will be changing in the next 10 years. The important thing is that educators are changing as well.

What are the potential benefits of using Creative Commons-licensed images in my blog posts?

Having Creative Commons licensed images in our blogs allows us to safely, legally, and most importantly add free images to our blog posts, which provides more engagement through a multimedia approach. The website Unsplash for example, provides thousands of free-to-download images for public and private use and lets me use cool pictures like this:
